Additionally, Morning Glory Music, part of the Mountain Fever Records label, just released an original Christian song by Dave Adkins titled "Say Jesus" from an upcoming gospel album also releasing next year.
Dave Adkins Bandtag:daveadkinsmusic.com,2005:Post/69962512021-08-20T14:00:00-04:002022-06-17T13:59:46-04:00New Gospel Single, "Say Jesus"
Morning Glory Music is proud to present the new single, “Say Jesus,” by award-winning singer-songwriter Dave Adkins. Tim McDonald and Dave Adkins wrote this modern southern gospel song destined to become a favorite song of praise. Adkins’ impressive career and chart success has proven he can cross many genres with his stunning vocals and powerful delivery.

“I am so excited to have you hear the first single from my upcoming gospel album. My great friend Tim McDonald shared this song with me, and I was lucky enough to become a co-writer,” said Adkins. “It has been my dream to do a gospel record with all the bells and whistles, and this project means the world to me. A huge thank you to Mark Hodges and everybody who has worked so hard putting their hearts and souls into this album. I hope folks enjoy listening to it half as much as I enjoyed making it.”

There is no mistaking Dave Adkins’ raw and powerful vocals. He appears on two tracks on the 2020 Grammy™ Nominated “Best Roots Gospel Album” Gonna Sing, Gonna Shout by Rick Lang, including the spectacular “Thinkin’ Outside the Box” song with Tammy King and Jerry Salley.

Adkins’ tremendous chart success includes two #1 albums on Billboard’s Top 10 Bluegrass Album Chart. Additionally, his radio chart success is remarkable with original songs and co-writes like “Blood Feud” with Larry Cordle and “Turn and Burn” with David Morris and Dawn Kenney. Adkins has quite the knack for choosing cover songs, including his beautiful rendition of “I Can Only Imagine,” that is his most streamed song on Spotify.

“Dave and I talked about doing another gospel record following the huge success of "Turn To Jesus," the acoustic Gospel record we made a few years back. Dave's friend Tim McDonald is a phenomenal piano and keyboard player, so we asked him to play on the record. On their way to the studio during that long drive, they co-wrote this song that turned out to be the first single from what will be an incredible album. Everyone who has heard samples says the same thing.... 'We could listen to this all day,' and that's what we've done, over and over,” said label chief, Mark Hodges.

Adkins is joined on “Say Jesus” by a choir consisting of Rhonda Hodges, Missy Delgado, Kate Delgado, Michael Slusher, Alan Vest, Erica Windham, and label owner Mark Hodges. Musicians include Seth Taylor on guitar; Nick Falk on drums, Tim McDonald on keyboard and piano; George Mason on violin; and Aaron Ramsey on bass.”

Adkins’ significant chart success, coupled with his energetic live performances, has kept him touring extensively this year.
Dave Adkins stepped to the plate and swung for the fences. His monster swing found the sweet spot and delivered a game-winning home run. "Right or Wrong" is filled with hot picking, great vocal presentations and a risk or two that absolutely pay off. If Adkins was trying to outshine previous releases, he may have done so.

Adkins assembled an all-star team of musicians with Terry Baucom on banjo, Adam Steffey on mandolin, and Justin Moses on fiddle and Dobro. Mix in Carl Caldwell and Amanda Cook singing harmony alongside Adkins' rock-salt-and-honey-sweet voice and the combination explodes from the speakers.

Leading off is "Blue Blue Rain," a banjo and fiddle driven song from the pen of Jerry Salley. The tune is hot, with a slicing mandolin chop from Steffey, and sets the stage for great things to follow. "Goodbye Caroline" a song about leaving home, delivers unbelievable harmony from Caldwell, especially in the second chorus when he sends his voice into the stratosphere. The first single, "Blood Feud," a duet and co-write with Larry Cordle, tells the tale of the famous feud between the Hatfields and McCoys. More great songs like "Him and West Virginia," "Roll Little River" and "Tired of Lonesome" continue what is for the most part a traditional bluegrass sound. But then there is a roll of the dice.

Adkins takes a gamble with a cover of "I Can Only Imagine." The song was a huge success for Christian Rock group MercyMe around the turn of the century. It was only a matter of time before someone in the world of bluegrass took a shot at it. Like the original, "I Can Only Imagine" builds slowly, starting with simple instrumentation before exploding in a chorus of vocal beauty that defies anyone to not get chills. The bet pays off with what may be the signature track of the recording.

Strong writing, superb musicianship, and the brilliant payoff on a gamble that could have easily failed, combine for a masterful recording project. This may very well be Adkins' finest work.
Dave Adkins Bandtag:daveadkinsmusic.com,2005:Post/68249962018-06-29T23:00:00-04:002021-11-29T22:52:53-05:00New Single: “Blue Blue Rain”

As far as Deep Roots is concerned, Dave Adkins can do no wrong. His 2013 debut album with Republik Steel, That’s Just the Way I Roll, was an Album of the Week selection here; his second solo album, self-titled, checked in at #44 on our Elite Half Hundred of 2016. In between these two efforts he released his first solo album and a duo album with Edgar Loudermilk that earned raves across the board in the bluegrass world. What we learned from these four projects was twofold: Adkins is simply one of roots music’s finest vocalists, blessed not only with a powerful, emotionally gripping style but also a sense of the moment that allows him to shape his approach to a lyric in such a way as to heighten the import of each song’s message. And the message delivered with heart has always been paramount in Dave Adkins’s art.

Which brings us to yet another Adkins project in yet another configuration. This one is so purely a product of the modern age it’s almost ridiculous. As legend has it, Adkins and two of his eastern Kentucky gospel loving buddies (Richie Rose and David Taylor) got together in church and made two cell phone recordings of themselves wailing that old-time religion accompanied only by Dave’s guitar. When the cell phone videos were posted on the Adkins Facebook page, the response was overwhelming—more than 700,000 views in three months’ time.

Meanwhile, back at Mountain Fever Records, company president Mark Hodges, having long harbored a dream of producing an all-gospel album he describes as “a simplified acoustic version of music that draws strength from the heart and means a lot to me and a lot of other people,” took note of the response to those cell phone videos Adkins posted. Soon enough, he was in the studio producing the newly minted Dave Adkins Trio (with instrumental support by Aaron Ramsey on guitar and mandolin, and Jeff Partin on dobro and bass) on a dozen mostly vintage gospel tunes.

Released on April 7, Turn to Jesus is not an Easter album per se but its songs are focused on the fulfillment a life in Christ promises, and in this way it celebrates the Resurrection, Christianity’s animating event. This idea is better articulated in a 2009 Easter Sunday sermon, “Steadfast and Immovable,” by John M. Buchanan, Pastor of Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church. Pastor Buchanan cited Serene Jones, the then-new President of Union Theological Seminary in New York City “and a very distinguished academic,” who claimed “Easter is not, finally, about ideas, theories, or even creedal affirmation, hypotheses about possibilities of resurrection; it is about our personal relationship with God. She writes, ‘Like Mary we long to be known by God, to be held in God’s gaze, to be seen by God as the object of God’s love and care.’ The astonishing news of Easter is that it is exactly how he comes—not only to introduce God’s new creation into history, but to you and me, to call us by name and to invite us to live lives that know that death has been overcome, that because he lives, we shall live also.”

“To call us by name”: That’s the rub of Turn to Jesus. It seems no accident that the first tune is the Bill and Gloria Gaither standard, “He Touched Me” (one of Elvis’s most powerful gospel recordings too, by the way), with its key lyric, “Something happened/He touched me and made me whole.” Throughout the album the Trio offers evidence of being made whole by their personal experiences with Jesus. Adkins’s earth voice carries the load, of course, but the harmonies provided by Taylor and Rose are exquisite and moving in their own right. Appropriately, this is a quiet album, with minimal instrumental support (in fact, one of the strongest numbers here is a cappella—a bluesy rendition of “Where Could I Go But To The Lord,” another gospel tune associated with Elvis, who featured it on his 1968 comeback special), but that’s not to say it’s lacking in energy. Guitarist Ramsey sets a blistering pace for the singers on “Honey In the Rock” just as his guitar and mandolin and Partin’s dobro spark a furious, urgent take on “Crying Holy Unto the Lord”; on the soaring “Working On a Building,” Ramsey and Partin (on bass) weave sprightly solo moments in between the verses.

But when things turn inward, reflective and philosophical, Turn to Jesus hits you where you live. The title track, penned by Adkins with the great Brink Brinkman, is the gentlest and most persuasive kind of altar call, with Adkins’s restrained but gripping vocal making the case for the title sentiment in penetrating lyrics such as “if sorrow brings you to your knees/you’re right where you need to be/turn to Jesus…” It’s Adkins channeling John Updike’s “Seven Stanzas at Easter,” counseling, in the Adkins way, what the poet meant when he wrote, “let us walk through that door.” A rustic vocal-and-guitar version of “Old Rugged Cross” makes manifest the triumph of the cross by dint of the near-palpable emotion in Adkins’s lead vocal and his partners’ sensitive harmonies.

At the end the exuberance of “Working on a Building” leads to a knockout one-two punch of soaring renditions of “I’ll Fly Away” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” that might well leave listeners speechless. But in the quiet encircling you when the music stops, you will be known by God, be held in God’s gaze and be “right where you need to be.”

Sirius XM will debut a special live concert event, Bluegrass Junction On Stage hosted by Kyle Cantrell, with Dave Adkins this Friday, October 21 at 6:00 p.m. Rebroadcasts will air Saturday, October 22 at 12 Noon; Sunday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, October 25 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

This exciting event was recorded a few months ago at the Sirius XM’s Music City Theatre in Nashville in front of a packed and very enthusiastic audience who also were part of a special meet n’ greet after the show. Dave Adkins and his band performed songs from his self-titled and chart topping album on Mountain Fever Records that made its debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 10 Bluegrass Albums chart earlier this year.

Just some of the songs fans will hear during the broadcast will include the first single release, “Change Her Mind” that previously hit #1 on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Tracks and hit #1 three times on the Bluegrass Today Top 20. The album has received heavy airplay on the station and reached as high as #2 on the station’s Most Played Albums.

Listeners were also highly entertained by the he lightning fast “Turn and Burn,” co-written by Dave Adkins, David Morris and Dawn Kenny that garnered 2nd Place in the prestigious Hazel Dickens Songwriting Contest. The band performed many fan favorites including “Fool-o-sophy” that is #8 this month on Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Tracks and was written by Kentucky Hall of Famer Larry Cordle and Country superstar Chris Stapleton. Attendees were certainly impressed with Adkins’ cover of John Michael Montgomery’s country hit “Sold” that was the #2 song on Bluegrass Junction’s Most Played Track in August and previously reached #1 on the Bluegrass Today Top 20.

Those in attendance can certainly agree with Bluegrass Today when they wrote “Adkins is entertaining, and truly has one of the most powerful voices in bluegrass today.”

Two years ago I wrote, “Dave Adkins is a bluegrass and country singer. This new CD, while aimed at the bluegrass market, has some strong country numbers in it.” Let me say it again.

Your opinion of countrygrass will color your perspective of this CD. To me, it’s undeniably bluegrass: the banjo of Curtis Bumgarner on eleven of the tracks tells that story. He plays a hard–driving banjo, throwing in some trick rolls, an influence on every track. But a number of the songs have a distinct country sound. Adkins sings both country and bluegrass well but he’s not a crooner like Jim Reeves; there’s too much gravel in his voice for that.

You may remember John Michael Montgomery’s “Sold” from 1995. Adkins delivers with gusto with the banjo his constant companion. The harmony vocals — Aaron Ramsey singing baritone and Jeff Partin singing tenor — are good but a bit understated. A great country song is “It’s Not Over (Til I Get Over You),” co–written by Tom T Hall. Tim Crouch does outstanding, bluesy fiddle work on this track. Listening to Adkins sing this number I’m reminded of Travis Tritt. Listening to a great tearjerker, “Angel Song,” I’m hearing Alabama. This tells the story of a man’s loved one who has pased away and he’s talking to her in heaven. It’s classic country music with a bluegrass twist.

There’s no shortage of bluegrass. “Emmaline” is set in coal country, cheating hearts, the big wreck, pure bluegrass. “Russell Fork River” was co–written by Adkins, a story of a young woman and a watery grave and the man who pays the ultimate price, it has a great fiddle/guitar kick. Ramsey, who plays mandolin on all tracks, plays guitar here. Tony Wray plays on all the other tracks and plays banjo on “Change Her Mind,” a country song about lost love and the hope to turn things around. The instrumentalists are all first class with Partin holding it together on bass. Adkins also contributed to “Turn and Burn,” a truck driving song that tells the story of the hectic life on the road. The prize for best title goes to “Foolosophy,” one of those words that is so apt and you wish you had thought of it. Larry Cordle and Chris Stapleton wrote this one and it fits easily in the country mold.

Great writing and arrangements, picking and singing. It’s a winner in my book.
Dave Adkins Bandtag:daveadkinsmusic.com,2005:Post/68249802016-05-23T22:35:00-04:002021-11-29T22:22:01-05:00#1 Song on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction

With his new self-titled album, Dave Adkins debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums Chart. And for good reason: the vocal power Adkins unleashes on well-chosen song after song has resulted in an album that is one of the first ‘must-have’ bluegrass collections of 2016.

Adkins contributed six original songs to the album including the first single release “Change Her Mind,” “A Whole Lot More To Tell,” and “One and Only.” He co-wrote three additional tunes – “You Don’t Have To Go To Be Gone” with Paula Breedlove and Brink Brinkman, and two with Dawn Kenny and David Morris – “Russell Fork River” and “Turn and Burn.” Other highlights include the aching “Fool-o-sophy” co-written by Larry Cordle and Chris Stapleton and the softly sublime “Angel Song” co-written by Corey Lee Barker and Chris Liffey.

With a rhythmically rolling banjo undercurrent, waves of fiddle and guitar raising the listener to emotional crests, Dave Adkins’ voice offers something real, something trustworthy and something thrilling to hold on to. It’s an exciting ride—this self-titled new album from Dave Adkins. Buy an extra copy; Adkins possesses the impressive kind of voice—full of personality and dimension, and instantly relatable—that you just want to share.

THAT’S JUST THE WAY I ROLL

Dave Adkins and Republik Steel

Rural Rhythm

Republic Steel was a large coal mining company that employed the fathers and grandfathers of three of the five members of a band calling itself Republik Steel. Coal mining is a hard, dangerous job and the men of the Republik Steel band play music with the seriousness of purpose and the gumption a man needs in order to survive the ordeal of extracting coal from the bowels of the earth. They have to be this good, because they must be up to the task posed by lead vocalist-rhythm guitarist-songwriter Dave Adkins, who emerges on this debut album as one of the most powerful, affecting voices in all of roots music. You don’t have to get seven songs into That’s Just the Way I Roll to figure this out, but that seventh song, an Adkins original titled “Don’t they Know He’s Watching,” a dark, apocalyptic number warning “the rich man in the penthouse or the homeless on the street” of divine retribution for aberrant behavior, will nail you to the wall. In his gritty, muscular voice, Adkins thunders like the Biblical Amos (the Old Testament prophet who “gave prophets a bad name,” according to The Rev. Victor Lee Austin, theologian-in-residence at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in New York City) heralding the wrath of God visiting corrupt politicians, hypocritical clergy (“you can’t be a truthful liar/and you can’t serve to gods/you can’t solve the problem and contribute to the cause…”) and the like. At the end, he brings it all back home, delivering the title sentiment in a wrenching howl, stretching out the word “watching” until his voice almost breaks, and he takes a breath before signing off with a solemn, “you and me-e-e.” Some are going to hear shades of the young Kenny Rogers in Adkins’s voice and sense of drama, but here and elsewhere Adkins, evincing a blues singer’s understanding of the games people play, plumbs depths of a bedeviled soul that Rogers could never get to.

By the time they arrive at “Don’t They Know He’s Watching,” Adkins and Republik Steel are deep into a hard-edged, impassioned bluegrass groove. Sparked by Matthew Cruby’s hard charging banjo, the band comes charging out of the gate with the spirited title track (written by the imposing trio of Terry Herd, Steve Gulley & Tim Stafford; Gulley, by the way, also produced the album; co-wrote, with Stafford, the abovementioned “Don’t They Know He’s Watching”; and penned the album’s closing number, a stunning guitar-and-vocal song of praise and redemption, “The Storm,” that Adkins delivers with fervent but nuanced urgency—this comes under the heading of “embarrassment of riches” for the band). The protagonist here is exactly the sort of wayward soul Adkins cites so caustically in “Don’t They Know He’s Watching,” as we learn immediately when he enters crowing, “on the corner of careless and out of control/what doesn’t kill me is taking its toll…” and, spurred on by Republik Steel’s punishing pace, goes on to sing defiantly of his dissolute lifestyle and kiss off any detractors with “That’s just the way I roll.” If this isn’t a concept album, then it’s close to being one, because the songs are at least loosely connected with respect to painting a portrait of a spiritual wanderer.

The same guy who boasts of his bulletproof hedonism in “That’s Just the Way I Roll” reveals a little more of himself in a stunning cover of “Rose Colored Glasses”—yes, that “Rose Colored Glasses,” the classic, career defining mega-hit that permanently ensconced John Conlee into the ranks of country’s great neo-honky tonk singers in 1978 but is here modeled after a memorable 1979 treatment by J.D. Crowe & the New South, when the late, lamented Keith Whitley was singing lead. With guest fiddler Justin Moses contributing yet another of his depthless, aching solos behind him, as Don Gulley adds soulful harmonies, and mandolinist Kenny O’Quinn crafts mournful fills, Adkins digs deep to enhance the narrator’s delusional belief that he can rekindle the flame of lost love. Here he gives a glimpse of the prideful, self-centered man of “That’s Just the Way I Roll,” but also modulates his attack with enough solemnity to let us know he’s not entirely oblivious to the truth, even if he can’t admit it. It’s a line Conlee walked majestically in his powerful original, but Adkins and the band’s relatively spare version is a shattering, unforgettable statement on its own merits. Another familiar cover, Dave Loggins’s “Please Come to Boston,” is arguably even more effectively rendered than “Rose Colored Glasses.” Those who found Loggins’s original a bit too syrupy as a pop mainstream item will hear it with new ears when Adkins cries it as a blues-tinged country ballad, softly framed by an evocative acoustic guitar, courtesy Republik Steel’s teenaged wunderkind Wesley Wolf, with O’Quinn’s mandolin and Moses’s dobro quietly augmenting the soundscape as the tune blossoms. It doesn’t hurt, either, to have Dale Ann Bradley seconding Adkins’s voice in the choruses with her own plaintive plea.

Interestingly, the Conlee and Loggins songs bookend a lively Adkins original, “Heartstrings,” a toe-tapping, banjo- and fiddle-drenched celebration of true love and a fruitful relationship, the truth of it evident in the lightness in Adkins’s voice as tells how “my whole world sings” when he’s with the gal of his dreams. The album’s sub-theme of spiritual striving is reflected in another triumvirate of songs, with Mark “Brink” Brinkman’s spirited “Laura Mae,” concerning a man putting his wanderlust to rest by going home to Montana to settle down with his gal (with bright, energetic fiddle and banjo solos by Moses and Cruby underscoring the singer’s resolve), nestled in between Adkins’s “Get ‘Em Up,” an upbeat southern gospel quartet number announcing Christ’s return and the dire warnings of “Don’t They Know He’s Watching.” The album’s penultimate tune, the reflective, moderately paced “Chasin’ a Dream” (a Brinkman co-write with Dale Pyatt), doesn’t fit the conceptual model described here but is a thoughtful and positive mission statement describing a musician’s calling, no matter its everyday obstacles. Then comes the aforementioned Steve Gulley gem, “The Storm,” with only young Wolfe’s subtle, delicately picked acoustic guitar supporting Adkins’s heartfelt expression of gratitude to the Almighty for His guiding hand (“with you leading me I can weather the storm”). It ends not with dramatics but with reverence, a soft musical exhale by Wolfe and Adkins at journey’s end suggesting, at last, a soul at peace with itself. Regardless of whether you buy the idea of this as being akin to a concept album or simply a collection of fine and meaningful songs masterfully realized in all aspects by exceptional musicians that call Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee home, That’s Just the Way I Roll is an impressive calling card for a band of bluegrass newcomers that values its message as much as it does its musicianship. And that is some way to roll.
